Happy Wife, Happy Life? Bullshit.

Everybody has heard the saying “Happy wife, happy life.” Men have been saying that shit forever. Usually, everybody laughs, the husband shrugs his shoulders, and somebody gives him that look like he just revealed the secret to a successful marriage. Every time I hear it, though, I think the same thing: What the fuck does that actually mean?

Because if what you're really saying is, “Whatever keeps my wife happy makes my life easier,” I don't think you've discovered the secret to marriage. I think you've discovered the easiest possible way to avoid confrontation. And there's a big fucking difference.

Think about what some men are actually admitting when they say it. Your wife thinks one thing. You think something completely different. Maybe you even know she's wrong. But instead of talking about it, standing your ground, or figuring the situation out together, you shut the fuck up. Why? Because you want everything comfortable. You want the house quiet. You want your routine. You want your side of the bed. You don't want three days of bullshit over one disagreement. Maybe you're hoping if everything stays peaceful, you'll still get laid Saturday night.

So you surrender. Happy wife, happy life. Bullshit.

Here's what I've always wanted to ask men who actually live by this philosophy: Were you like this when you fucking met her? When you started dating, did you agree with every goddamn thing that came out of her mouth? I fucking doubt it. You had opinions. You had friends. You had interests. You had shit you wanted to do. You had boundaries. You were your own person.

So what happened between dating this woman and marrying her? Did your balls drop off somewhere between the engagement ring and the fucking wedding cake? Because here's the funny thing: that guy is the guy she married. She didn't marry some dude whose entire personality consisted of saying, “Yes, dear.” So why does marriage suddenly mean you're supposed to become afraid of disagreeing with the person you married?

Don't misunderstand what I'm saying. Relationships absolutely require compromise. Sometimes you're wrong. Sometimes she's wrong. Sometimes you're both being fucking assholes and need to meet somewhere in the middle. That's life. That's also a relationship. But compromise and surrender aren't the same fucking thing.

Compromise is saying, “I don't agree with you. You don't agree with me. Let's figure this shit out.” Surrender is saying, “I still think you're wrong, but I'm going to shut my mouth because dealing with your reaction isn't worth it.” That's not peace. That's conflict avoidance.

And I've actually heard men brag about this shit. “I learned years ago. Just say ‘yes, dear.’” Everybody laughs. Congratulations. You didn't discover some ancient secret to marriage. You got really fucking good at avoiding problems.

Here's another problem. You don't magically stop caring about something because you decided not to talk about it. Every time something genuinely bothers you and you swallow it just to “keep the peace,” that resentment has to go somewhere. Do that enough times, and eventually you're sitting across the room from somebody you're supposed to love, wondering why the fuck everything they do suddenly annoys you. Maybe it wasn't one enormous event. Maybe it was a thousand conversations you decided weren't worth having.

That's where comfort can become dangerous. You've got your house. Your bed. Your television. Maybe you've got your man cave. You've established your routine. And maybe you start thinking, “Why fuck all this up? I'll just keep my mouth shut.” Great. You've preserved your routine. But are you actually fucking happy?

If your wife says you're not hanging out with certain friends anymore, you're not doing something you enjoy anymore, or you're not allowed to do this or that, and your automatic response is surrender because otherwise she's going to get pissed, what exactly are you doing? I'm not telling anybody to deliberately disrespect their wife. I'm asking something much simpler: Why are you afraid to disagree with the woman you married?

And before somebody reads this and decides Angry Archie just declared war on women, calm the fuck down. Respect goes both ways. If you're the husband and your wife has to walk around on eggshells because disagreeing with you ruins the next three days, guess what? You're the asshole. Nobody gets crowned king or queen because they got married. The point isn't that men should control relationships. Neither person should.

Your wife should be able to look at you and say, “You're being a fucking asshole.” And sometimes you should be man enough to say, “You know what? You're right.” Being a man doesn't mean you're never wrong. But it sure as hell doesn't mean pretending your wife is never wrong either.

I don't want a happy wife and a miserable husband. I don't want a happy husband and a miserable wife. I want two people who can disagree, get pissed off, talk the shit through, admit when they're wrong, compromise when compromise makes sense, and still actually fucking like each other when it's over. That's a relationship.

And I've said this for years: if your entire philosophy of marriage has become “happy wife, happy life” because surrendering is easier than actually participating in your own relationship, then either figure out how to communicate with each other or get a fucking divorce. Because spending twenty years quietly resenting somebody just because you're comfortable and don't want to be alone isn't some great marriage accomplishment.

So the next time some guy smiles, shrugs his shoulders, and tells you, “Happy wife, happy life!” ask him one question: “Are you both happy?” Because if the answer is no, what the fuck are we celebrating?

Maybe the goal was never supposed to be “Happy wife, happy life.” Maybe it's simply two people who fell in love, remained individuals, learned how to disagree, learned how to compromise, and after all the bullshit life threw at them, still respect the fuck out of each other.

That's marriage. At least that's the way I fucking see it.
